Levator
Scapulae

Levator scapulae
("raiser of the shoulderblade") attaches above to the cervical
vertebrae (the vertebrae of the neck) and below to the superior angle (the upper
inner corner, toward the spinal column) of the scapula. Its job, as its name
says, is to raise the scapula. This muscle is an almost universal site of
tension and tightness. It can cause pain in the neck and shoulder, and can also
set off trigger points in the other neck muscles, which can then cause
headaches. It is best treated with trigger point compression, deep tissue
massage, and moist heat and stretching.
